The Age of Menopause
The average age of menopause could only be given in general terms.
It varies from region to region and also from one woman to the other.
With regards to menopause age, there are two very important cut off ages
to know- the age at which the first symptoms begin to show up(
perimenopause age) and the age of the last menses(menopause age)
Perimenopause Age
As women approach menopause, the question often comes up about the probable age at which they begin to expect symptoms especially the hot flashes. Some women may begin to inquire about this as early as in the late 30’s.
Generally, the first symptoms are noticed in the mid 40’s but some rare cases start as early as 35.
The following factors my hasten the onset of perimenopausal symptoms
- Cigarette smoking
- Hysterectomy: Can cause symptoms to start about 3-4 years earlier than expected.
The Menopause Age
Menopause, the actual cessation of menses, usually occurs between
the ages of 40 to 60 years in most western countries, with an average
age of 51 years.
This age definitely varies from country to
country and from one woman to the other. In other countries like the
Philippines, it can be as low as 44.
Premature menopause
It is not considered normal for menopause to occur before the age of 40 years. When it does, it is called Premature menopause. The most common reason for premature menopause is surgical removal of the ovaries which creates a state of absence of estrogen similar to that of menopause and is therefore called surgical menopause.
Another cause of premature menopause is Premature ovarian faillure where the ovaries prematurely stop functioning.
