Ovulation Predictor Kit
An ovulation predictor kit is simply a collection of ovulation test strips that are used to identity the date of ovulation.
These ovulation kits have made it easier for most women to follow
these ovulation date and maximize their chances of conceiving. They are
more convenient than the more familiar fertility charting using
ovulation signs.
I cannot overemphasize the importance of
understanding the simple things about these kits before using them. Be
sure to read the facts below to help you get the maximum benefit from
these.
If you have used ovulation kits before and would like to tell other women about your favorite please use this form.
Predicting Ovulation
The importance of predicting ovulation lies in its utility in
identifying the best time for sexual intercourse with maximum chances of
obtaining a pregnancy. The ovulation predictor kit is one of the
methods now available for women to use in monitoring the process of
ovulation.
How Does An Ovulation Predictor Kit Work?
Ovulation is a process tightly regulated by hormones. Just before the
egg is released, a hormone called Luteinising hormone(LH) is released
in an abrupt amount, called the LH surge. This occurs about 24 to 48
hours before the egg is released( average of about 36 hours). After the
LH surge occurs, the blood concentrations rises and the urine
concentrations also rise after about 4 hours. This abrupt increase in LH
amount in urine can therefore be monitored to indicate when ovulation
is about to occur.
An ovulation predictor kit simply monitors the amount of LH in urine and is positive when the LH surge occurs.
Once the LH increase is detected, it is good to have intercourse within 24 hours and the next 2 to 3 days following.
Having
intercourse at the exact time of ovulation and within 12 to 24 hours
of ovulation will not change much! The goal is not to have intercourse at
the exact time of ovulation. Women have called their husbands to come
back home for this! This is not relevant.
General Test Procedure
- Choose an Ovulation Predictor Kit brand. There
are several options available out there in the market for women to use.
Choose a brand that is FDA approved and that suits your budget. See
below for commonly used names you may choose from. - Determine your best days to test. You
can do this using your cycle length and luteal phase length. Just
subtract the luteal phase length from cycle length and that gives you
the likely ovulation day. Add about 2 to 3 days before and after to have
a like fertile period. Example- cycle length is 30 days, luteal phase
length is 12 days. Ovulation date=30-12=16, so on Day 16. Adding 2 days
before and after gives Day 14 to Day 18 of your cycle are the likely
fertile days. If you do not know your luteal phase length, use 14. For
more on this and for those with irregular cycles, you may read predicting ovulation. - Determine what time of the day will be best for you. Most
women will have the LH surge by 8am in their blood. It takes about 4
to 5 hours for the surge to appear in urine so best timing for using an
ovulation predictor is between 11am to 3pm. Some authorities recommend
around the noon hour. Therefore select the time that is best for you,
taking your consideration the timing above and your schedule. Remember
that you will have to do the test about the same time each day to
optimize the results. If your schedule does not permit 11am to 3pm
testing, you may opt to do the test twice, in the morning and evening
hours to optimize detection. Remember that the surge is not the moment
of ovulation; it only tells you that ovulation will occur in the next
24-48 hours period. - Read the testing instructions and follow them strictly. This
is an important component of your testing. In fact it may determine the
overall outcome. Read each manufacturers instructions carefully for
each ovulation predictor kit and be sure to follow them. Do not apply
instructions from another manufacturer. - Test preparations. No
special preparations are needed. Just be your usual self! Avoiding
unusually large volumes of water about 2-5 hours before the test may be
helpful as it will prevent dilution of your urine and less sensitive
testing. - Testing and interpretation. Follow
the manufacturer’s instructions carefully on how to collect the urine
specimen, use the ovulation predictor kit test strips and interpret the
results. Interpretation most often involves comparing colors and
research has shown that some women have considerable difficulty with
this. If you think you will have problems reading the color changes, you
may want to use the digital kits that will read it for you. It is cool
but costs a little more. If a test strip result is not very clear,
repeating it with another strip may prove helpful. - Now sexual intercourse. When
should I have sex? It is often interesting to note the responses of
women when they notice positive test with the ovulation predictor kit,
especially the neebies. Some call their partners immediately for an
intercourse with less concern where they may be!! You do not need to
have an intercourse right away. At least you have the next 12 to 24
hours if the current conditions are not favorable at all. Trust me,
meeting with your partner in the next 2-6 hours might not be easy
sometimes! The recommendation is to have intercourse within the
next 12 to 24 hours after a positive test and then the next 2-3 days
following.
Ovulation Monitors
These are little electronic devices that make the whole process of
testing, interpreting and recording easier. If you can afford them, they
can make your life much easier especially the OvaCue that uses saliva
and therefore further simplifies testing by removing the need to use
urine.
Contacting Your Doctor
If your have irregular cycles, varying widely from cycle to cycle, you
may want to contact your doctor for specific recommendations for your
case. You may need medical help in using an ovulation predictor kit.
Similarly, if you are taking any medications or have any conditions that
may interfere with the results, your doctor might be of help in
advising you.
